![]() ![]() We are all guilty of sometimes making bad decisions on the airsoft field, it happens. Play safe and make good decisions so you can keep going. If I quit, a major part of me would feel empty and it is often the only time I see many of my close friends. There are few times when I’ve considered never playing airsoft again. I play because of the friends I have made, the fun and light hearted adrenaline rush, to stay in shape, and to stay sharp with my cross training for the real deal. We make mistakes just like everyone else. You will not hear DJ or I say we are better than anyone, we are not cocky, we are not invincible, we are definitely not the best. Honestly, all the veterans I’ve played with are more relaxed and easy going than many of the non-military players. I haven’t seen a veteran go full knife hand on anyone like you would think, and I haven’t seen a veteran make absurd or rude corrections to any younger players. Rarely have I met anyone in airsoft I haven’t liked. I have yet to meet another veteran at a local airsoft field I haven’t liked. I have to agree with him there.Ĭamaraderie in the airsoft community is something that I find attracts veterans. Dylan AKA DJ, National Guardsman and Lulzsoft member, will tell you that his most effective way to relieve stress is playing airsoft. As upsetting as that can be for me, I don’t think I will stop permanently playing for a number of reasons. I make sure not to overdo it physically when I am on the field, and I sometimes must remove myself from the game if I don’t feel right. Regardless, these medical conditions affect me every day and I am a much more cautious airsoft player today. I did a decent amount of training, met incredible soldiers, and spent much of my time turning wrenches and changing oil. ![]() I am no hero, I never deployed, don’t feel sorry for me. Unfortunately, multiple concussions and other medical issues I received during my Army career got me an early medical retirement from the Army. Yes of course plastic is much different than lead, and bad habits can carry over as well as good habits, but military tactics are pretty effective for military simulation airsoft. ![]() From what I saw, small unit infantry tactics do not change much from airsoft to the military. I was looked at by my peers as someone who knew what to do when the blank firing adapters went on. If you are thinking about joining, run your ass off, and do push-ups and sit-ups to failure every day.Īll those days playing airsoft with friends and at local fields paid off again when it came to doing small unit tactics. I had been running 36 miles a week for two months prior to me shipping to OSUT (One Station Unit Training). I personally will change the configuration of my gear for hours until it is perfect to my standards of weight, balance, dexterity, function, and mobility. In addition, I learned so much more about kit that I use now what to use and when to use it, and how different jobs change your loadout. Along with that, I knew how to set up MOLLE which was a little less painful than it could have been going in blind. Running around in gear, even as heavy as general issue equipment and armor is, was no big deal for me as I was used to it and knew how to fit all the stuff. Shooting from cover and close quarters combat training was also an element that felt a little like airsoft with the Lulz crew. On the M4 platform, reloading was not some mysterious or tricky ordeal. In training, I quickly realized that my airsoft experience was actually an advantage, and it made training a little less painful and more familiar. I was off to Fort Benning to be a Cavalry Scout. The tender age of eighteen came quickly though, and I was gone, see ya. Most of my best childhood memories are with my friends, out in the woods, basements, and the crop fields playing airsoft. I wouldn’t be the LARPerator I am today if not for them. I was very different than them and much younger, but despite all that I was always treated with respect and we all got along. I spent the money I made from odd jobs on cheap gear and moderately priced AEGs.Įventually I met E House, Red Beard, Geoff, Fox, and Tyler and they only got me deeper into airsoft (and debt). I had always wanted to join the military, and airsoft seemed like a good avenue for preparing myself and having some fun. At about fifteen, airsoft became a little more serious for me. Most of my closest friends are other kids I met at a very young age who also thought shooting each other with realistic BB guns was a good idea. My general interest in firearms, hunting, and the military really drew me towards the hobby. Here we have it, another perspective on airsoft from a veteran.
